SlumDog Millionaire

Image taken from here

Just watched SlumDog Millionaire

It was thrilling,
funny,
sad,
sympathetic,
loving,
cruel,
interesting.....
and ete etc

I don't know, all the adjectives in the world would do it justice!

A film not to be missed.

not because it is Indian,
not because it has won sooo many awards
not because it is a love story

But it is the story of fate,

yes it is written

  7. Ok, it's stunning. it's fabulous. it's utterly extraordinary and twenty-and-hundred other flattering adjectives.

But think again. Apart drom being a bit - agret bit, I should say - unrealistc(how the hell does two "slumdogs" find themselves speaking perfect English?),does it show the good side of India at all?. I mean, apart from the 3 main characters, the others are either pathetic remnants of humanity or real bastards(even the guy who conducts the quiz). The film gives a totally negative picture of India and my mum who had this wish to visit India, suddenly told me that she's found herself wondering whether it's a really good idea.

And mark, THE DIRECTOR IS AN AMERICAN!! If You pay real colse attention to what is being said by the characters, and not only to the happy reunion of the young couple, you'll hear things like "We are real Americans" seconded by guestures of giving generous bulks of American bills to the "poor Indians"(Check this out if you've got the movie now with you-the scene where two foreigners visit the Taj Mahal and when half-kicked-to-death Jamal says "this is India")

    "Real India", my foot!!!

Don't get decieved guys. I see the film only as another glorification of the "civilized" West.

So people, don't get me wrong. But you've got to open your eyes a litte bit more wider...

  8. @Pavithra, I’ll try to be brief.

Why do people watch movies? For entertainment. For education, they watch documentaries.

No one here says the movie is about “real india” – we are discussing the qualities of the film. We are certainly not discussing the Indian society or the country at large. It’s just a story, told from an interesting angle, it is not someone writing a chapter in the Indian equivalent of Mahawamsa.

At the same token, Titanic was one of the biggest tragedies of modern history but the movie is remembered as one of the best romantic movies of our time. You mean to say Spielberg is an idiot?

Watch the movie, please treat it as nothing more than a movie. You will like it.

    :)

  9. Hello, Serendib_Isle - None of that "You WILL like it" nonsense to me please, coz in case you've forgotton, I made a comment on it AFTER I've watched it.

We've got a problem here - a difference in character between the two of us. You - it seems to me - are a romantic, whereas I am a realist and analyse every single detail may it be in a book or a film. You ask me to "treat it as nothing more than a movie". Well, that says everything about the way of your thinking. Sure I can do what you ask if and ONLY IF THE FILM HAD NOTHING IN IT TO SLANDER INDIA. And as for me calling Speiberg is an idiot, well, you've just screwed up the whole meaning of the message that I tried to give. I don't call Speiberg an idiot because he doesn't use his film as a method of influencing the minds of the spectators against India!!!

You say that films are for entertainment. That is true. But you must be also aware of the subtle underlying meanings of it too - otherwise how can you be even call yourself a true citizen if you are not aware of what is happening around you? In this case, you ought to be particularly vigilant coz I take it that you are an Asian.

So may this reply be your awakening call. And.... no hard feelings ok?

  11. It is not ethical to hijack someone else’s blog for a silly argument. However, forgive me Deeps, this reply needs to be posted.

    Pavithra E,

Let me be brief, again. The main director Danny Boyle is not Amrican; he is British, born in Manchester. You would know the Indian co-director Loveleen Tandan if you have watched “Monsoon Wedding” – another movie where Indians speak English!

Any Indian movie is re-dubbed in many regional languages within India, so even if the movie was shot in Hindi, the Bomaby slum dwellers would be speaking Tamil in cinemas in Tamil Nadu. How realistic is that? Need I say anything more about making International films and English..?

Even though I could offer you some more truth that would be your awakening, I’d take a bow – like I said, this is not the place for silly arguments.

By the way, I am pretty much amazed at your ability to analyze me and understand my thinking – judging by just one sentence; but then again I would question your credibility since you don’t seem to know the difference between the Americans and the British. And yes, not only I’m Asian, I’m very much Sri Lankan.

I’m sorry if I have hurt your feelings.

  12. Watched the film - I rate it as a good film, but not so great as to win so many oscars.
Excellent story line..but thought acting could have been better..

Also there were some basic flows. E.g. How come a slumdog speaks with such a good foriegn accent?

The western film critics will not see these flows :)
I.e. I cannot comment on the accent of 'Der Untergang'

  13. To Serendib_isle:

    Ok, amigo,
    1. American or British, the subtleties don't have a substantial impact on the general message that the film is giving. What matters is that both are Westerners.
    2. We are NOT talking of dubbing here. It IS ORIGINALLY in English - or at least most of the time, and thus UNREALISTIC.

However, you were right about one thing. This is not the place for lengthy arguements, so you go your way and I'll go mine for this "discussion" ends here.

  14. Its good when compared to other indian movies but its a film that never gives out anything to a person who watches it.
a film like "saving private ryan" or "wall e" your pleasure has more boundaries you enjoy the film watch those two films if you havent and then talk about slumdog millionaire as a 'film'
I dont care the harm it does to india's name because i dont care about india :P. I only take it as a film and as a film it never portrayed the main character as a main character -- he never did anything to change the movie!! the guy just stood and wait everything to happen, its a major glitch in the story, but it goes to the story writter
Director has done his job well thats all so the end movies 'looks' great.
and it features MIA's dumb songs LOL
